Spring is just around the corner. Do you feel it?
It’s always around this time of year that I start wanting to clean up my diet and eat more green foods. Even though I think I eat pretty healthy regularly, there’s something about the energy of spring that makes me want to clean my home and clean up my diet. This is where green smoothies come in.
One of my favorite smoothies is my spring detox smoothie loaded up with kale, arugula, pea shoots, and microgreens from the farmers market. (This smoothie also uses cucumber and avocado for the base so it’s perfect for those needing a fruit-free/low sugar option.) However, I know that not everyone lives in the Pacific Northwest and has access to fresh, local greens and, to be totally honest, I know that not everyone likes the taste of green things! If this is you, then this basic berry smoothie is going to be your new BFF this season!
This smoothie combines fresh spinach (available in any grocery store) with frozen berries, coconut water, shelled hemp seeds, and a liquid vitamin supplement (I used this one). Since spinach and berries are some of the foods that contain the most pesticide residue, I would recommend choosing organic if possible and if you don’t have coconut water, substitute almond milk or a milk of your choice.
This recipe is a low-sugar way to get all the vitamins and minerals you need to fuel your day, along with a hefty dose of fiber and Omega-3’s from hemp seeds.
